Officina Battaglin is a boutique Italian bike atelier born from both racing heritage and artisanal craftsmanship. It was founded by Giovanni Battaglin, the former pro‑rider who won the 1981 Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, and today is led by his son Alex Battaglin, who continues the tradition of creating custom steel bicycles in Marostica, Italy.

What sets OB apart is its dedication to handcrafting every frame in small batches, combining classic techniques (such as fillet brazing or lugged construction) with modern design considerations and materials. Their slogan is very much about blending art, performance, and identity — each bike is built not just to spec but to personality.

Why choose Officina Battaglin?

1. Tailored, high-end craftsmanship
Unlike mass-produced bikes, OB frames are built with personal input. From geometry and size to finish and style, each bike is tailored to its rider. The hands-on process ensures precise fit and a sense of individuality.

2. Steel heritage meets modern tech
OB leans into steel (especially Columbus tubing) for its ride quality, durability, and ability to absorb vibration, yet integrates state-of-the-art features: internal routing, disc‑brake standards, UDH derailleur hangers, and generous tire clearances. Their frames blend tradition with technical relevance.

3. Distinctive finishing & aesthetics
One of their signature touches is the cromovelato finish – a chrome-plated steel base overlaid with translucent colored lacquers — which gives the frame a shimmering, depth effect as light changes. Riders can choose from several finish styles, from minimal solid coats to showpiece chromovelato variants.

4. Exclusivity & collectible appeal
OB limits production deliberately — many models are available only in limited numbers or upon consultation. This exclusivity adds to their desirability among discerning cyclists and collectors.

5. Reliability for real-world use
Though they are boutique bikes, the designs include thoughtful features for durability and rider convenience: for example, universal hangers (UDH) for easier replacement in remote locations, and clearance for wide gravel tires. These features reflect OB’s aim to make bikes that perform in demanding conditions.

OB Bikes: Range & Specifications

Officina Battaglin offers a range of road and endurance (road with a touch of comfort & long‑ride capability) steel bikes that blend timeless frame‑craftsmanship with modern performance. The range includes the Siena, Marosticana, and Roma among others. These bikes are characterised by the use of fine steel tubing (Columbus), lugged or oversized lug construction, disc brakes, thru‑axles, and modern “comfort” touches (such as wider tyre clearance) while preserving the elegant aesthetic and ride feel of classic road bikes. Each model can be customised, especially in terms of finish (including their signature cromovelato finishes) and colour.

While OB’s catalogue evolves, here’s a snapshot of key models and their standout specs  — you can adapt this to include your full current lineup.

The Roma: Key Features & What Makes It Special

The Roma (2024) is a standout in the OB road‑endurance line for riders who want a mix of agility, comfort, and visual distinction. Here are its main strengths and specifications:

  • Hybrid Construction: The frame combines steel and carbon—steel for the main tubes, paired with carbon elements (e.g. fork). This aims to get the best of both worlds: the smooth, vibration‑damping ride quality of steel, with lighter weight and responsive stiffness where it matters.

  • Lugged Steel Design: Roma uses oversized stainless steel lugs, redesigned to fit steel and carbon tubes. The lugs aren’t just decorative—they reinforce structural integrity while giving a distinctive aesthetic signature in OB’s style.

  • Columbus GB81 Tubing: Custom specification steel tubes from Columbus (GB81) are used. This is high‑quality steel tubing with good strength‑to‑weight, allowing the bike to be lighter than some pure steel alternatives while retaining steel’s inherent comfort.

  • Modern Features:
    • Disc‑brake only setup.
    • T47 bottom bracket.
    • Maximum tyre clearance: 700×35 mm — giving room for more comfortable, grippier tyres without compromising road speed.
    • Compatible with wireless electronic groupsets (so modern shifting without cables), streamlining the build.

  • Geometry & Sizing: The Roma comes in multiple stock sizes (from XS through XXL). The geometry is tuned for endurance / all‑day comfort but still preserves enough sporty angles and handling to please riders who want responsiveness (steep-ish seat tube angles, moderate head tube angles, etc.). Also consistent chainstay length across sizes (420 mm), well‑thought bottom bracket drop, etc.

  • Aesthetic / Finish: One of Roma’s strong draws is its finish. It features the cromovelato finish with a special gold‑rose hue, inspired by the Giro d’Italia pink, paired with contrasting raw carbon areas. Riders can choose from about 12Premium Cromovelato colours. The combination of raw carbon + coloured steel lugs/steel parts gives a bold but elegant contrast.

  • What’s Included with the Frame: When you buy a Roma frame (or frame set), you get the frame in a stock size, a carbon fork in raw finish, head parts, front and rear thru‑axles, the custom cromovelato finish, and a certificate of authenticity signed by Giovanni Battaglin.
